From Reel to Reel to digital, this interview with members from Johnny Quest aired in the late 80’s. Original members Payton Reed and Joe Farmer offer a view of Raleigh’s 80’s music scene.

A funk punk band, Johnny Quest’s music is difficult to describe. Often parallel to the Beastie Boys sound happening organically at the same time in Raleigh. These record store kids would have accessed musical influences from a wider genera giving them access to early Hip Hop.

Studio A 1987 – 1991 This Vintage Podcast is from a Public affairs show which aired locally on the radio in the late eighties. It was recorded from Reel to Reel tapes played for the first time in 30 years. Audio issues occur playing analog tape which has been dormant for so long. Once a large inventory of digitized Reel to Reel tapes has been accomplished, restoration and rerecording can begin.

College Music Series 1987- 1991 In the late 1980’s Raleigh’s music scene was recognized internationally with the success of the import album Comboland. Even with a vibrant music and club scene, many bands found it hard to get their music on local commercial radio. These recordings were syndicated over five North Carolina college radio stations. Some of the music is lost, only surviving on albums and studio recordings.
