Oberlin village is a Historic African American neighborhood in Raleigh. Founded in 1866 by freedman and former Slaves who came to Raleigh for refuge while Federal troops occupied the city. Many settled outside of Raleigh along Oberlin Rd, two miles from the city of Raleigh in 1866.

Churches, Historic homes, the Oberlin Cemetery recently received some protection and a sculpture created by Thomas Sayre was dedicated in memory of Oberlin’s residents past and present.

After decades of losing structures to development. Raleigh began protecting Oberlin in 2018 with historic designations. The development continues along Oberlin Rd with vital structures being saved and restored.
